Tips for making perfect cookies:

  1. Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature before creaming it with the sugar. This will ensure that the butter and sugar are well combined and will result in a smoother cookie dough.

  2. Don't overwork the dough when adding the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined, as overmixing can lead to tough cookies.

  3. Chilling the dough for at least 2 hours is important. This helps the dough firm up and makes it easier to roll out and cut into shapes.

  4. Roll out the dough to an even thickness, about 1/4 inch, to ensure the cookies bake evenly.

  5. When cutting out the cookie shapes, dip the cookie cutter in flour to prevent the dough from sticking.

  6. Bake the cookies until they are just set around the edges, as overbaking can result in dry, crunchy cookies.

  7. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps them firm up and prevents them from breaking.

  8. Allow the decorated cookies to sit at room temperature for at least 3 hours or until the frosting has completely hardened. This will ensure the frosting doesn't smudge or get damaged when storing the cookies.

  9. Store the cookies in an airtight container or on a plate wrapped in plastic wrap at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Perfectly Soft and Colorful Sugar Cookies with Homemade Frosting

Ingredients: For the Cookie Dough:

  • 1 cup of softened unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon of baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon of salt

For the Sugar Cookie Frosting:

  • 4 cups of sifted powdered sugar
  • 6-8 tablespoons of milk at room temperature
  • 2 ½ tablespoons of light corn syrup
  • Gel food coloring (optional)

Method: For the Sugar Cookies:

  1. Let's start by making our delicious sugar cookies! Cream together the butter and sugar in the bowl of a standing mixer. Add the vanilla extract and eggs and beat until everything is combined.
  2. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt, and beat everything together until you have a smooth dough.
  3. Divide the dough into two equal portions, and shape each piece into a round, flat disc. Wrap each piece tightly with plastic wrap and let them chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F/180°C and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Remove one of the sugar cookie dough discs from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften up a bit.
  6. Place the sugar cookie dough on a floured surface and roll it out to a thickness of ¼". Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes and place them 1 inch apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
  7. Keep repeating until you've used up all the dough. Don't worry about any scraps - you can gather them up and re-roll the dough up to two more times (that's three times in total!).
  8. Pop the cookies in the preheated oven and bake for 9-10 minutes, or until the cookies are puffed up and just set around the edges. Once they're done, let them sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat this whole process with the second disc of dough.

For the Sugar Cookie Frosting:

  1. Once the cookies are all baked and cooled, it's time to make some frosting! Combine all the frosting ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk everything together until it's smooth. Start with 2 tablespoons of milk and gradually increase until you reach your desired consistency.
  2. If you want to add some fun colors to your frosting, separate it into smaller bowls and add your favorite gel food coloring until you get the shades you want. Then, place each color in a disposable piping bag fitted with your favorite tip.
  3. Once the cookies are completely cooled, it's time to get creative and decorate them! Use your frosting to make fun designs and patterns on each cookie.
  4. Let the decorated cookies sit at room temperature for at least 3 hours, or until the frosting is completely hardened. If you're in a hurry, you can speed up the setting process by chilling them in the refrigerator.
  5. Once the frosting is set, you can store your cookies in an airtight container, or on a plate wrapped in plastic wrap at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Enjoy your delicious and fun sugar cookies!

Enjoy, Happy Baking!
